The Importance Of Protecting Water Catchments Areas

  • Water is the source of life
  • Water is part of the environment
  • Water for the people
  • Water for the future

Protecting the cleanliness of water catchments areas is our collective responsibility.

Maintain the cleanliness of raw water resources for our future generations.

The importance of water in our lives

Water is a vital necessity of life. Imagine what our lives would be like without water? Nevertheless, not all the water in the world is fit for our use. Water needs to be maintained and treated before it is safe to drink.

What are water catchments areas?

  • Water catchments areas are areas where water is naturally contained in the landscape. Rain water and water which flows out of catchments areas is channeled to lakes, rivers and oceans.
  • Catchments areas are a source or raw water. They are generally recreation spots and habitats for the local flora and fauna. They also support irrigation systems and the local fishery industry.

Do you know?

The demand for water gradually increases as the population grows. However, the sources of raw water have been steadily decreasing due to the destruction of catchments areas and pollution of rivers, as well as the incidence of droughts and illegal logging activities. Consequently, the quality of raw water has dropped and the quality has been marred. This in turn, has caused the costs of water treatment to escalate.

What can you do?

We should actively protect catchments areas and raw water sources so that we can enjoy a constant supply of water both now and into the next generation. Among the measures we can take:

  • Don't pollute rivers with rubbish, toxic waste and used motor oil.
  • Use biodegradable soaps or detergents.
  • Preserve the wellbeing of the environment.
  • Report illegal logging, river pollution etc. to the relevant authorities.
